Market Regulation: Can Misleading Beauty Product Claims Get You in Trouble?

In the modern world, beauty care is considered an investment. People expect providers of beauty products to deliver the results they promise. While this is true, there are still brands that are not doing what they claim. 

Unfortunately, these companies are investing in advertisements, instead of the products they offer. This results in beauty claim substantiation being virtually non-existent. According to a recent study, four of five beauty care brands will not deliver on the claims made. If misleading advertisements are used, the brands are claiming that their products will result in beauty-related miracles, but there is no substantiation to these claims. 


Getting to the Truth

  • There is a common saying -; if something is too good to be true, there is a good chance it is. This is a saying that applies to claims made by companies, too. When a company makes a claim, it should be backed with concrete evidence. If this is not provided, then a claim is just that -; a claim. 

  • Depending on the way that claims are made and the evidence that is presented, it may affect the perspective of someone who hears it. According to many experts, the claims made by beauty product companies is crucial in selling the items. That is because most consumers base decisions on proof that the product they are purchasing is truly effective. If a beauty company makes a claim that a specific cream can remove wrinkles thanks to a "miracle ingredient" the claim is considered a validation for customers. 

Deciphering the Truth behind Beauty Claim Ads 

  • One study focused on 757 claims made by different personal care and beauty product brands. These ads involved 300 full pages of claims and information. The ads investigated were from popular magazines and the claims were divided into multiple groups, including acceptable, vague, omission, and outright lie. From the study, just 18% of the claims were acceptable and just 14% were trustworthy. It is important to note that beauty claim substantiation will not be possible with claims such as "happiness" and well-being. Also, most of the methods used to test products are still questionable and they cannot be considered "substantiation".

Will Beauty Companies Face Repercussions for False Claims? 

  • While there are laws and regulations related to cosmetics and beauty products that were created by the FDA, false claims do not fall under this category of what a company cannot and can do. As a result, beauty and skincare companies can make false claims, without any real concern of repercussions.  

Therefore, consumers must be savvy and take the time to do research on the products they are considering using. In fact, this is the only way that someone can feel confident they are purchasing and using a product that will meet their needs, regardless of what those needs are. 

When it comes to beauty claims and ads, knowing what to consider and look at is the best way to find the highest quality products on the market today. Being informed and knowing what to look at is the best way to ensure the desired results are achieved, regardless of the type of products that are purchased. When it comes to beauty products, there are a lot of options, out there. This means it is up to consumers to find the highest quality products available.
