1 Utama Shopping Centre's Wonder Food Adventure X The Butterfly Project

1 Utama Shopping Centre

Don't you think it's a typical Malaysian thing that when asked "Where do you want to go for lunch/dinner/etc?", there is always that generic reply of "I'm fine with anything - you pick."

That never ending battle of where to go for brunch, lunch or dinner is a common question that you often hear within our generation today. Funny how you never see a similar argument over breakfast at a mall though.

So through this common courtesy that we practice, I believe that this dilemma actually stemmed from the fact that we are often hesitant to try something new or rather we would have already have a preferred location in mind that we are used to.

WonderFood by 1 Utama

So with regards to addressing this issue, 1 Utama Shopping Centre has come up with a brilliant venture which was called "1 Utama Wonder Food Adventure" to engage its public by introducing them to their varied restaurants that serve our beloved local cuisines.

Wonder Food; 4-24 November 2013 Activities

Now the objective of this Wonder Food Adventure is to educate the public on restaurants that offer a wide variety of local favorites at 1 Utama Shopping Centre.

You can basically call it a gourmet tour for the senses. A social height to feed your inner foodie if you will.

The One Utama Loyalty Card; OneCard

1 Utama also has a Loyalty Card called the 'ONECARD' which allows shoppers to experience privileges while shopping and dining at the mall. So it's what you would call a give and take situation.

Another interesting fact is that 1 Utama is the 4th Largest Mall in the world and is listed as one of the ‘World’s 12 Best Shopping Cities’ on CNN. What an achievement!

Wonder Fun at One Utama

Now to begin, this 1 Utama Wonder Food Adventure carries out from 4th of November - 24th of November 2013.

On the 16th of November, 50 bloggers were invited to experience this fun event with accordance to the Butterfly Project.

From Left: Edazz from : http://edazz-beautylicious.blogspot.com, Myself, Claudine from: http://littledine.blogspot.com/ & Choy Peng http://choypengism.blogspot.com/

Being one of them, I quickly hightailed down to 1 Utama Shopping Centre as the clock struck 11am. Imagine my surprise when I saw a huge crowd already gathered around the registration booth.

Look at that line!

Now even though I reached the venue right on time, the built-up for the line had already begun.

Tammy and Illy were the ones that were briefing us on our guidelines at the registration table and as I spoke to them I learnt that they were there by 10am setting up for everything.

*Major Salute!*

Now as you can see from the pictures above, the arena was already festively decorated with fun props and enjoyable activities for us.

Before we began our journey, we fished out our Wonder Food Passport and looked into what we had to do.

Claudine's Hungry Face

As you can see, Claudine is giving her 'I am hungry' face.

Luckily the odds were in our favor as the food came within 10 minutes.

As luck would have had it, Ms. Josephine Koh, (The Assistant Manager, Marketing) had already taken care of what to serve us on the menu.

She took great care in explaining to us about the brand vision and background and assisted us greatly when it came to briefing us about the menu and our meals .

From Left: Golden Olive Chicken, Korean Charbroiled and Jerk BBQ

What was served:

We had the pleasure of sampling 3 of their signature dishes which was the Golden Olive Chicken, Korean Charbroiled and the Jerk BBQ.

Later on we also had another popular dish of theirs - called the 'Hot Hot Drum.'

Keeping in mind that all of this was made with 100% olive oil, the meat for each one was tender, extremely succulent and savory to our tasting palettes.

The Sidelines

Sidelines:
  • Coleslaw
  • Potato chips

BBQ Chicken's Popular Dish

Popular Dish:

As mentioned above this spicy delight is called the 'Hot Hot Drum.'
Served crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, this dish is prepared with a special Korean sauce and extremely one of a kind.

My absolute favorite amongst the 4 chicken dishes.

Lammeeya's Signature Dish - Lam Mee

However, as per its restaurant name 'Lammeeya', it comes to no surprise that Lammeeya's signature dish is one of KL's famous recipies of 'Lam Mee.'

Myself with the varied menu of Lammeeya

Offering a large selection of buns, fruit juices along with delicious local teas and coffees, Lammeeya can also be one of those restaurants you can go to if you would like a light treat.

Set dishes are also available to diners if they preferred a good combination of sampling Lammeeya's iconic dishes along with a drink at an affordable price.

We made a pitstop at Lammeeya but did not sample their menu. Above are some of the pictures of what they provide on their menu to give you an idea :)

Enjoying the ambiance of Lammeeya

We heard that that they were serving the their signature Lam Mee, but as we were traveling in the group and the place was non-halal, we sat down and took in the ambiance of the place instead.

Myself and Claudine

Bustling with people, Lammeeya was a very busy place especially during lunch hour. Friendly chatter fills the restaurant so you can indeed see that Lammeeya is quite a happy place to be.

#Pit Stop (Intermission)

The lovely ladies who did our personalized tattoos at the booth

We decided to take a slight break from eating and head on over to do something fun. And that's when we spotted a Personalized Tattoo Booth.

Spray on tattoos of course ;)

Getting my Spiderman Tattoo done

Initially I wanted the big Superman Tattoo stamped right on my wrist, but sadly as the logo was too big, I opted for an awesome Spiderman one instead.

As the lady was creatively doing her artwork on my hand, I felt a light cooling feel as she sprayed on the dye.

Spiderman Tattoo done!

The spray on tattoo took about 5 minutes to be done and about another 5 minutes to completely set. Best not to 'accidentally' rub the tattoo just out of curiosity though ;)

Absolutely loved the ombre effect she did right in the middle. The Spidy logo suddenly became much cooler.

Edazz getting her Iron Man Tattoo done

Edazz decided to take in a more creative approach and make her Iron Man Tattoo go on her upper left thigh.

Was super sexy indeed ;)

Claudine was amazed!
Claudine looked intrigued as she watched the tattoo being done on Edazz. So she decided to join in the fun and do a cute little Snoopy on her right arm too.

#3 Molten Lava Cafe

Location:

LG312B, Lower Ground Floor, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Bandar Utama, 47800 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

The Entrance of Molten LAVA Cafe

Background:

Located near Cold Storage at 1 Utama, Molten Lava's specialty are Churros.

A referred form of a 'Spanish Doughnut' - a fried pastry based snack that originated from Spain that is usually eaten during breakfast dipped in hot chocolate or cafe con leche.

The Counter with the displayed menu and macaroons

The Churros are made upon order and are pipping hot when they reach your table.

The girls deciding what they want to get

Their signature churros comes in 3 varieties:

  • Molten Chocolate Dip Churros RM5.80
  • Cinnamon Sugar Churros at RM4.80
  • Filled Churros (Dulce De Leche, Chocolate) at RM4.50 each

Molten Lava Cafe also has funnel cake, assorted macaroons and delicious cupcakes for your tasting pleasure as well.

The Seatings in the Molten Lava Cafe

Ambiance:

There are tables set inside of the cafe as well as outside. It's a pretty small area with limited seats but gives customers a relaxed feel.

Those sitting on the inside will have a slight advantage though as they will be able to see how the churros are being made through the glass partition.

Churros!

What was served:

We had a pleasant exchange with the staff and was served with their Cinnamon Sugared Churros.

With one delicious crunch, I felt that I was literally in foodie heaven. Topped off with their delicate cinnamon dressing, this is a treat that you absolutely do not want to miss.

Claudine and I enjoying our Cinnamon Sugared Churros

Overall Satisfaction :

Their staff were extremely friendly and accomodative to us.

The service was amazing as churros were made upon order, and all 4 sets of churros came to our table within 10 minutes.

#4 Food Box

At the entrance of Food Box

Location:

LG312C, Lower Ground Floor, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Bandar Utama, 47800 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Background:

Located right next to Molten Lava Cafe, this little Food Box Cafe caters a variety of food to its customers. Reminds me a little of how home cook food is made though.

Priced at an affordable range with nothing over RM 10, this little cafe is something you do not want to miss.

The environment in the Food Box Cafe

Ambiance:

Located right opposite an arcade, this open concept cafe admittedly can be a little noisy but for those who enjoy the hustle and bustle of what is going around them while eating, then kudos this is the place for you.

Large enough to seat a family of 4 to each table (you might want to join tables for a larger crowd), this cafe allows diners to enjoy their food without missing out any of the activities that are going around in their area.

Rice with Veggie and Egg

Asam Chicken

Thai Chicken

What was served:

We were given a generous serving of 3 dishes.
  • Rice with Veggie and Egg
  • Assam Chicken
  • Thai Chicken
My dish of choice was definitely the Assam Chicken

The sauce was amazing and was gently tucked into the meat so that when you bit into it, you would feel the marinated juice flow into your mouth.

Food Box Cafe

Overall Satisfaction :

I enjoy open concept cafes such as this, so I quite liked the ambiance at this place.

With a little twist of mixing modern equities with home-cooked food was quite appealing to me as well.

However, the placement of the cafe was next to an arcade so I was a little put off by the noise. Nonetheless, the food did not disappoint and tasted great.

#5 Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh

Location:

P282, Lower Ground Floor, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Bandar Utama, 47800 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Me and Choy Peng at the entrance of Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh

Background:

This restaurant is located at a corner on the LG Floor right in the middle of LG Promenade and LG High Street.

Admittedly we got a little lost trying to find the location, but we were fortunate to have an awesome tour guide - Ms. Choy Peng on our side.

Famous for its savory Bah Kut TehPao Xiang Bak Kut Teh is non-halal. Nonetheless we had a peek at the menu and decided that for those who could sample their dishes should give it a go.

Needless to say, we settled in for a bowl for their famous Bah Kut Teh herbal soup.

Surveying the menu with Edazz

Priced at an affordable range (RM 15-RM 20) for its dishes, Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh is perfect antidote for those craving a bowl of piping hot herbal soup with different cuts of pork bones and meat in it.

Balancing out it's long hours of marination, the meat is soft and tender and the soup is chalked filled with herbal goodness.

Usually served as a breakfast dish, pairing it up with rice and a bowl of You Tiao (Chinese Doughnut/ Fried Breadstick), you will definitely be satisfied.

Ambiance:

The Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh restaurant is filled with traditional Chinese decor.

Being able to accommodate large crowds, seatings are available to diners inside and outside.
Truth to be told, if you prefer having a greener scenery while you eat, it is best to sit outside.

Peaceful and welcoming, this restaurant is an amazing find indeed.

Look at that menu!

The menu serves a variety of pork chops and cuts that can be served to diners along with their herbal soup.

Priced at an affordable range, their dishes are an impeccable taste to one's foodie palette.

The Signature Sets

What was served:

We were given a generous serving of their Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh's Herbal Soup.

Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh Herbal Soup

Usually paired with different cuts of meat, this herbal soup tasted delicious.

Rich in flavor and whilst teasing your taste-buds with its creamy thickness, this soup is truly an attraction on its own.

For those of you that enjoy a bowl of hot soup during the rainy weather - this is the place to be. *Hint!*

Claudine and Choy Peng enjoying a bowl of herbal soup together

Overall Satisfaction :

I found that the concept of this restaurant was extremely lovely and I enjoyed the fact that it had an indoor and outdoor seating as well.

The food was great and the ambiance was clean and relaxing. Truly enjoyable for diners who are looking to experience a great morning treat.

#6 Bisou Bake Shop

Location:

LGK105, Lower Ground Floor, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Bandar Utama, 47800 Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Bisou Bake Shop

Background:

Opening it's first store in 2007 on Heritage Row Kuala Lumpur, Bisou Bake Shop puts a sophisticated swirl on nostalgic favorites.

Sporting 13 cupcake flavors everyday along with an additional 'Cupcake of the Month', cupcake lovers are spoilt for choice as there is a flavor to suit every palette.

Fabulous selections also include their cakes like their very famous Banoffee Pie and Real Black Forest Gateau.

Bisou Bake Shop also consists of healthy salads, daily soups and freshly cut sandwiches made from homemade bread.

Diners can savor a comforting meal then top it off with Bisou's signature cupcakes and desserts.

The Kakak at the counter who was so lovely in showing us the varieties of desserts along with cupcake of the month

The table setting. Note that Bisou's cupcake for the month of November is called "ChocoLush"

The display of their signature cakes
Ambiance:

Filled with fun colors and sweet smelling cupcakes, those who favor sweets and dessert sampling would be in high heaven by now.

The Variety of Cupcakes

This place reminds me of a cute little bakery I once came across while travelling in Germany.

Quaint and pretty in its decor, it is clear that making cakes, cupcakes and other savory items are an art.

What was served:

We were given to sample their signature cupcake of the month called "ChocoLush."

Retailing at RM 6 per piece, this cupcake is full of chocolaty delights and with the added colorful sprinkles on top, it's presentation was not too bad either.

I am a happy girl with my Bisou Bake Shop's Cupcake of the Month; ChocoLush

Overall Satisfaction :

Loved everything about this little bakery. I am a sucker for cupcakes and desserts so this definitely takes the cake. *no pun intended* :)

Food and presentation was great. The set up was creative and was artistically done.

I especially loved how the cupcakes were placed through the partitioned glass and how the colorful sweets was arranged behind. Admittedly that was how I got attracted to the store.
