Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer (Brightener/Illuminateur) Review

Maybelline's best seller ; the Instant Age Rewind Concealer

Finding the perfect concealer is like finding a needle in a haystack. First you would need to find one that matches your skin-tone with perfect consistency, then you have to make sure that it can last up to at least 8 hours long without making your eyes look too cakey, then moving on to considering the coverage build up and finally ensuring that the product does not damage your skin after removal.

Phew. Seems like a lot of steps isn't it? Nonetheless it is understandable because a lot of us girls have this problem; what with puffy eyes and dark circles being the perpetual issue in our line of work.

I have come across a lot of friends who are constantly looking for that perfect concealer and have tried everything from drugstore products to high end brands but end up liking none. This is common issue so no worries because it is when you experiment that you find out the type of product you need and not want.

In the shade 160

So being one of those that does my homework before purchasing a product, I heard many good things about the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer. However I didn't think much about it at first but when Alyssa and the girls asked me to help them purchase it while I was in Melbourne, I thought why not get one for myself and see what the fuss was all about?

How do you apply?

So when I spoke to the salesgirl at the priceline store in Melbourne, I noted that the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer came in six shades; 110 (Fair) , 120 (Light), 130 (Medium), 140 (Honey), 150 (Neutralizer) and the 160 (Brightener/Illuminateur) which I will be reviewing today. Sadly all six of these shades are not available in Malaysia so likewise you would need to travel out to get them.

The girl that I was talking was pretty helpful and recommended me the shade 110 (Fair) which to be fair (see the irony? Lol) matched my skin-tone perfectly but since I was on the lookout for a brightening concealer, I decided to go with my instincts and get the brightening/illuminateur one instead.

The Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer

The Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer retails at AUD18.95 which when converted to Ringgit is around RM57. To me, this was pretty steep but since it was one of Maybelline's best sellers, I can't say that I was surprised.

Taking off the seal

This concealer seems to be a pretty well known product in Australia because I literally had to run around the city to try and get the different shades for my girlfriends. Plus on hindsight, while I was purchasing this product, I saw a woman taking six in one go!  Let's just say because of that one course of action, I was more geared up to try it the moment I got home.

Unveiling the applicator

While unboxing it, I found that I actually liked the packaging because it was very sleek, small, convenient and easy to carry around for touch ups. Plus once you have got the seal off, you would have uncovered small applicator puff ball which is very soft to the touch.

The amount of product dispersed

On the first try, getting the product to come out requires you to keep twisting the knob at least ten times which I found to be a little bit of a hassle. To be honest though, it also made me question the hygienic aspects of this product because you simply cannot clean it after an application is done unless of course you replace that small fluffy sponge on the top.

Maybelline claims that the sponge is treated with an anti-bacterial agent so for me I will go ahead and take my chances with the product though I am going to have to make sure that I have an absolutely clean face every time I put this concealer on.

The swatch

Swatching the product, I noticed that this shade of the brightener/illuminateur concealer had a very pinkish-peach tone to it. Admittedly I got a little put off by it at first due to it's bright pigmentation and started wondering whether I made the correct choice in color. Constant dilemma I tell you.

Nonetheless when blended out, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it sets rather smoothly and dries to a sleek powder finish. Best to apply a face primer to avoid any form of cakey-ness though but overall it gives a good bit more than medium coverage but slightly less than full.

Dark Circles no more!

Things to take note of though is that the sponge is a rather big, so avoid going too close to the lash-line or else you will end up risking the product on your lower lashes. The Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer also sets pretty quick, so if you want to blend, take your index finger and gently pat on the product. Try not to smear and smooth the product out because it will look oddly uneven and extremely cakey if you do.

Despite it's drawbacks, this concealer is far better than most and I am really happy that I made the right choice in purchasing this shade instead of 110 (Fair) or the 150 (Neutralizer) . Given the fact that I have been using a Body Shop Eye Cream for the past 3 weeks (which I will review later), my dark circles have been considerably lighter, so opting for the risky choice of brightening was indeed the right way to go for me. The brightening effect is always tricky and for those of you who are looking to purchase between the Neutralizer and Brightener, I will always say to take note of your skin tone first.

This is because the variation is quite different; like how those with dark puffy eyes work best with a concealer that has a yellow undertone that will correct your natural shade for a dewy finish; 150 (Neutralizer) while those that are prone to dark circles are better off with a pink-peach shade 160 (Brightener/Illuminateur) for a more luminous effect. Pick the wrong shade and your eyes could end up graying instead of brightening.

However all in all this is a pretty solid concealer and definitely worth the repurchase. It honestly does work very well but I only wish that they would make it more accessible to those of us back in Malaysia so that we would not have to go out of the country to search for it.

Xx!
