Shaun's Hair Studio Post Care Tips and Tricks (Bleach or Dyed Hair)

With Shaun's Hair Studio Creative Director and Leading Stylist Shaun Cheong

Today we sit down with Shaun's Hair Studio star director and leading stylist Shaun Cheong to find out what goes on behind the magic of his bold streaks, multi platinum rainbow colors and trendy hairstyles.

Now if you guys have been keeping up with his Facebook page and Instagram profile, you would already know that his studio and staff does amazing things when it comes to colors. However in terms of post care, there are not many people out there that do learn the importance of maintenance; which in Shaun's book is absolutely essential as well.

On how to take care of those strands

You see more often than not, there are many of us that strive for our hair to be unique; dabbling in countless variation of colors and seeing what works best on us and what does not. Unfortunately when it comes to color mixing, most of our strands can get pretty stubborn and hence upon application, it might get to be a little tricky if not handled by a professional colorist.

Plus for those of you who are worried about bleach, know that you only need to do it when you plan on making your tones light. If have dark Asian hair like yours truly and plan on going pastel, just be prepared to strip your hair of its natural tones/ previously dyed ones. For in order to achieve the color that you want, you need to work it into strands that are solid and ensure that there would be no room for the colors to intertwine and mix.

Post care after bleaching

So let's make a move on to the tips and tricks on how to care for colored and bleached hair. As Shaun mentions; after bleaching, your hair will become slightly dry and will be in need of much nourishment. Hence as a solution, a treatment is a must to quench your thirsty strands.

If you are using Olaplex during your process, (step 1 and 2) it shall protect and nourish your hair from the roots to your ends, but just in case you aren't, here is what Shaun suggests in terms of post care in order for your strands to get back that moisture and ensure that your carefully laid out color does not disappear.

How to Care for Colored | Bleached Hair

  • PMB: How many times a day would you need to use shampoo for your strands?
    • SC: I would recommend shampooing once in 2-3 days as too much will strip the color off your hair much quicker. Also, you can always use a shampoo that is meant for color, has no sulfates and silicone as well as too much intense nourishing.

  • PMB: What brand recommendation would you give for shampoo and conditioners for colored hair?
    • SC: Two brands that I would highly recommend would be the Molto Bene and the Shiseido Luminogenic range. However added hair masks and oils would also help extend the longevity of your hair color as well.

  • PMB: If you are the type that likes styling and blow drying your hair, is there a particular setting for the styling devices to be set to?
    • SC: Well, it is always best to keep styling on the cooling end. So let's say if you enjoy showering in warm water, it is strongly recommended to switch it to the polar opposite and apply cold water to your hair instead. The same thing goes for hair drying, instead of hot heat, just change it to a more cooler setting instead. This will keep the color intensity of the strands much longer and lock in the natural oils and moisture better.

  • PMB: Usually after the first wash, your hair would look very dry at the ends. What would you recommend would be the best way to get that shine back?
    • SC: A good signature treatment would help in this case. Signature treatments would help lock in moisture with collagen and protein, and pamper the strands by balancing out all the brittle ends. This improved texture would help the reflectiveness of the hair and when exposed to the light it would bring out the shine. Plus depending on your hair type, the treatment and luster would usually last for 3-4 weeks so by that time, your hair would have shown improvement in recovery to brittle ends and would be reliant on its own without the extra protection of the treatment.

  • PMB: What would you avoid doing (activities-wise) to prevent your hair from losing color?
    • SC: You can still do all the activities that you have previously done but there are a few pointers that would be good to heed to. For instance, avoid chlorine. This is a palette cleanser for all those vibrant shades. However if you go swimming often, you can add in a sulfate-free leave in conditioner before you jump in just so it won't affect your hair tone.

  • PMB: What sort of products would you use to ensure that the hair will not damage more after coloring?
    • SC: Besides leave in treatments and oil, it would help if you could get your hands on a solid heat protectant and SPF for your hair. These two will help take care of the shades plus in the long run, it would also assist in preventing more damage.

  • PMB: What sort of styling brush would you recommend for the hair after coloring?
    • SC: Use a wide tooth comb and gently go through the strands while your hair is wet to prevent breakage. If you are planning to style, you can use a medium handled round brush.

Taking care of your strands

Shaun also mentioned two takeaway tips and tricks which you should take into consideration before dying your hair so I have listed them down for you below, but in the meantime, if you guys would would like to go in for a personal consultation, you can always ring Shaun at 012 245 6055.

Tips and Tricks:

  • PMB: What colors often fade fast on Asian Hair?
    • SC: There is no particular color that will fade on Asian hair but if you are the type who bleaches their hair too often, any color applied will fade much faster than usual. This also depends on the dryness of the hair as well. If its too dry, the color will fade just as fast.

  • PMB: If you are planning on a drastic hair color change, would you recommend coloring your hair on your own at home?
    • SC: In terms of at-home color, it is best to keep it safe, with going two tones lighter or darker than your original hair color. However for drastic hair changes, I would not recommend it for the product bought would be pre-mixed so it would be difficult to control the volume of peroxide within. Hence, do find a professional colorist for it might lead to damage and breakage if it is not done properly.

    1. It does take some time to maintain, but if you are constantly with a hectic schedule then maybe it would be best to go for colors that are a little bit more of a warmer tone instead of pastel :) No bleaching required and minimal maintenance.

    1. Molto Bene has a few variants babe but the one that I would really recommend is the MoeMoe Shampoo. It gives a lovely fragrance to the hair and it does not really rub off color easily. It is absolutely lovely to use :)

    1. Awh thanks Sherry :) In terms of bleaching, if it is on virgin roots, best to do it just once to see how the bleach takes onto the hair. However I am sure all will go well once you try it :)

    1. The color mix that was done with Shaun was stunning Pamela. If you have fragile ends, bleach might hurt your hair but if it is strong and healthy, and you plan on going light, try bleaching one time and see how it fares.
