At  KLIFW 2016

KL Fashion Week is one of the biggest showcases in our fashion industry and if you are the type who follows up closely on fashion trends, you would already know that it is one of the more exciting days to enlist your participation in within the year.

So this time around, we take a look at the very first ever Kuala Lumpur Indie Fashion Week (KLIFW) that took place for two days at the White Box this 2016. This showcase is basically a platform for indie and upcoming designers to not only exhibit their collection and designs but to introduce their talent to the fashion industry.

Held on the 14th and 15th of May, KLIFW had also organized The Bazaar and The Concert which happened during the same weekend. The Bazaar took place at the White Box, on both days of the fashion show featuring a variety of indie vendors, fashion accessories and even food and beverages, and thus ended with a bang with performances at The Concert by amazing artists such as Malaysia's leading act De' FAM as well up and coming indie acts such as Sacret Heroes and RYOTJONES.

Now in terms of the event, we have from our local and popular indie designers to upcoming fashioners from Lim Kok Wing University and Saito College, where there were designers such as Owl by Dowlani, Jaimag by Kannan Jaiamani and Amituruci by Tanesha. There were Phynix, Leon Ng, Adilya Botabayeva and Queena as well and from Saito College, the fashion platform was represented by Elmira M.Beigee, Kheshwararren Parameswaran, Michelle Soong, and Amy Teoh.

So with regards, what made KLIFW extra special for this 2016 was also that it was in collaboration with The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) thanks to founder Alvin Sinclair. Building a community to highlight the importance of liberation and to support cancer survivors, this was done by the empowerment and defiance against the illness in the form of art and fashion.

That particular fragment of the show which is known as #AkuEmpowered was the climax of KLIFW because ten beautiful women who are also cancer survivors strut down the runway wearing designs specially made for them which represented their empowerment and strength not only as an individual but as a cancer survivor.

KLIFW Fashion Highlights

Owl by Dowlani ‘s designs

Owl by Dowlani was our favorite guest designer from Day One. All designers showcased a wonderful collection but the designs in this collection were pivotal. It is colorful, fun and suited for every day wear. For those of you that do not know what OWL is, it is a pattern house specializing in fun yet sophisticated printed clothing, home-ware and stationery that brightens up any closet and daily lifestyle.

The second choice on our list is Amy Teoh , a graduate from Saito College and at 21, she is ready to take the fashion world by storm. She is currently working as a visual merchandising coordinator for a major British multinational retailer and loves loud choices of elements and colors with finer detailing.

Another collection that was quite notable was Queena (Luo Tianxuan). Interested in arts, fashion and styling from a very young age, she took a career choice at Limkokwing University of Creative Technology. Taking the initiative to explore different areas in fashion up till today, she believes that fashion is all about how one expresses his or herself.

Queena’s designs are edgy yet still has a feminine touch to it

Amitaruci by Tanesha Vinod was another favorite from Day 2 of the show. Her ethnic wear takes inspiration from India which goes deep down to the roots of tradition. The embedment of culture in her designs is quite prominent and thus gives in a modern look to the collection.

Overall, the collections featured at KLIFW were stellar and it was great seeing young talented designers making a name for themselves in the fashion industry. In addition with the collaborations with various brands and powered by Brickfields Asia College and IACT College, there was also wonderful support from NCSM that gave a great surge of excitement to the showcase.

  7. Some of the dresses are in very loud colours and designs. Not really my kind of clothing - I call them runway clothes. On the other hand, it's interesting to see Tanesha's improvisation on Indian clothing.
